Tomorrow (February 19, 2015) is Human Trafficking Awareness Day at the Colorado State Capitol. Human Trafficking Awareness Day (HTAD) at the Colorado State Capitol is sponsored by the Human Trafficking Task Force of Southern Colorado. HTAD brings awareness to the issue of labor and sex trafficking in the state of Colorado, to its legislators and citizens, and advocates for effective public policy to punish perpetrators and rescue and protect victims.
Each year, an estimated 17,000 vulnerable men, women and children are trafficked across the borders of the United States and then forced into slavery. Many are fleeing terrible situations in their home countries, and come to the U.S. to find a better life. Unfortunately, the nightmare often begins when they reach our shores. The Catholic Bishops in the United States have been national leaders in advocacy and education to eradicate sex and labor trafficking. For six years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and their partners have provided intensive case management services to victims of human trafficking, assisting more than 2,232 survivors of trafficking and over 500 of their family members. Hopefully one day, we can eradicate the horrible crime of modern day slavery.
